The inspiration for Moonlight comes from the playfulness of light and shadow, the shift of day and night, and the phases of the moon. Oblikus Design Studio wanted to create an interactive light object that emphasizes touch and allows users to have a truly immersive experience.
Moonlight stands out from other wall lamps with its interactive features and endless possibilities for creating atmosphere and playing with light and shadows. Each lamp has two light sources - a front light and a back light - that light up and dim inversely proportional to each other. This allows users to arrange and use the lights in endless ways to change the atmosphere according to the occasion or their current mood. The lamps can be interacted with using simple touch gestures, and they can also be controlled from a distance through smartphone apps.
The realization of Moonlight involved overcoming technical challenges. The LEDs are positioned in the outer housing rim and emit light towards the center. To ensure even light distribution throughout the entire front surface, the design incorporates Light Guide Panel technology. Multiple layers of laser-etched acrylic panels combined with a diffusing foil achieve this effect. The housing is made from solid aluminum, which not only gives an elegant finish but also prevents the LEDs from overheating.
The touch-sensitive surface of Moonlight is also made from aluminum and is connected to a capacitive sensor chip. Another chip controls the LEDs and ensures smooth and responsive dimming for the best user experience. Additionally, a third chip enables wireless control of the lamps.
Moonlight is available in three sizes: 200 x 200 x 40mm, 300 x 300 x 40mm, and 450 x 450 x 40mm. Its sleek and simple design, combined with its interactive features, invites users to quickly understand and engage with the lights without much prior explanation.
The Moonlight project started in March 2013 and underwent several iterations and technical improvements. It has been exhibited at prestigious events such as Light + Building in Frankfurt 2016 and the Design Museum in Singapore, where it stands as a permanent feature today.
Oblikus Design Studio conducted extensive research to create Moonlight. The main objective was to develop an interactive object that combines physical touch with the latest wireless technology. The designers aimed to establish an emotional connection between the user and the object, leveraging the natural human need to sense and explore tactile and visual experiences. Feedback from people in their surroundings and at exhibitions played a crucial role in the design process.
Moonlight's innovative design and emphasis on user experience have earned it recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2018. This award celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
